Pop culture conceptualists The PopTarts and Krysztof Nemeth bring their works to the city of Andy Warhol this February and March at Blue Ruin Gallery. Pinup girls, television idols, rock stars, and food labels are just a few examples of the iconography found in the multifaceted works of Whipsmart! The exhibit runs through March 29.
Whipsmart! describes the driving force in all these works. “Erotic art as a genre celebrates the intelligence of the viewer, their appreciation of sensuality, and their inherent understanding that sexuality at its best is mischievous and playful,” states Nemeth. Krysztof Nemeth is a Seattle-based artist and graphic designer whose pen, graphite, and multimedia works focus on playful fetishism. His post-modern illustrations bring to mind superhero comic books, old drive-in theater films, and pinup girls.
The Vancouver-based PopTarts are an amalgamation of the works of Nicole Steen and Vicki M. Known as “The First Ladies of Lowbrow,” their paintings show women with a pop culture twist and a sense of humor.
